HMS Software announces 30th Anniversary of its flagship product TimeControl
Montreal, September 18, 2024 – HMS Software, a thought leader in project and timesheet systems since 1984 has announced the 30th anniversary of its cornerstone product, TimeControl. This marks a remarkable milestone in software of any category. The TimeControl timesheet system was first published in 1994.
“Looking back at the incredible legacy of TimeControl is quite remarkable,” says Chris Vandersluis, President of HMS Software. “The launch of TimeControl 1.0 in 1994 marked our transformation from a consulting firm to a software publisher and here we are, 30 years later with TimeControl continuing to grow and evolve.”
The first release of TimeControl was designed to respond to a particular corporate need. Project-oriented companies such as high-tech or engineering firms needed a timesheet that could integrate to project management systems and Finance systems simultaneously. TimeControl was the first commercial product to do this.
“We knew right from the beginning we were going to have to focus on flexibility as a key element of the system,” explains Stephen Eyton-Jones, HMS Software’s Director of Technical Services who was one of the leaders of the original development team and continues to be responsible for TimeControl’s development. “We had requests from the project side of our clients that were distinct from the finance departments of the clients and that meant that TimeControl would have to be able to adjust to challenges we hadn’t even considered yet. I think the flexibility of the system has been core to its success.”
TimeControl not only included a flexible structure, but also embraced an approval process that HMS Software invented to accommodate both parts of each client’s business. The Matrix Approval Process for Labor Actuals™ introduced a unique solution to having approvals done for both organizational/financial purposes and project management purposes at the same time. The same approval philosophy remains in the product today.
“We didn’t know what to make of TimeControl’s chances of success,” says Ken Edwards, HMS Softwares’s senior account executive. Mr. Edwards has also been with HMS Software since the original launch of TimeControl. “We knew TimeControl looked great and there was a lot of interest in the included integrations to project management tools like Primavera and Microsoft Project, but its almost immediate popularity caught some of us by surprise. TimeControl’s client list started with Bombardier and General Motors back in 1994. Now the client list reads like a who’s who of industry.”
HMS Software has continued to evolve TimeControl as technology has evolved. First, there was support for client-server databases, then the first web-browser commercial timesheet system then one of the first mobile apps then Software as a service. In the 30 years since the release of TimeControl 1.0 there have been over 50 versions and editions released.
“We are incredibly proud of TimeControl’s success,” says Vandersluis. “It is central to the success and longevity of HMS Software and I’m happy to say, it shows no sign of slowing down. Innovation of the product line continues to grow and the list of clients we are making a difference with continues to expand. TimeControl now has five separate editions and our clients are literally all over the world.”
